Wayne works with a mixture of stoneware crank and woodfired body with additives of Ruabon red clay

Background
Wayne graduated from Harrow in 1995 with a degree in
Workshop Ceramics. In 2000 he gained an MA in Applied Arts
from the North Wales School of Art and Design in Wrexham.
Wayne is now based in Prestatyn, North Wales, where he has a
small workshop and wood-kiln down by the sea.

The work he produces, varies from large sculptural pieces to
smaller functional pieces. He works with a mixture of
stoneware and crank with additives of Ruabon red clay and
course silica sand. He uses various ash and shino glazes as
well as vitrious slips. The wood-fired kiln has roughly one
cubic metre of packing space, and usually fires for between
24 to 50 hours reaching temperatures exceeding 1300 C. He
based the kiln on the design of the Sasukeni smokeless kiln.
He makes work with the firing in mind, creating and making
marks in the clay with the intention of catching the ash
from the fire which at sustained temperatures turns to
glaze. Working on large sculptural pieces gives him the
opportunity to be more aggressive with his marks, sometimes
ripping and piercing through the work. With smaller pieces
he tries to maintain the same aggressive impact in a more
 controlled manner.
